Heartland's Safe Walking Routes map:
#1 SOUTH OF 7000 S. TO 7800 S. BETWEEN 1300 W. AND REDWOOD
You can find safe walking routes within the neighborhoods or you can walk towards the school on the periphery using 1300 W, 7800 S., Redwood Road, or 7000 S. There are two areas where the sidewalk is missing. Aside from those areas, any path will be a safe walking route. Missing sidewalk areas: west end of 7700 S. on both sides and 1300 W. between 7442 S. and 7506 S. There is a crossing guard to help students safely cross the street on 7125 S. (SW corner of school property)
#2 EAST SIDE OF 1300 W. BETWEEN 7800 S. AND 7000 S.
2-a If you live north of 7400 S. – make your way to 1300 W. and continue north till you reach 7000 S. There will be a crossing guard to ensure safe passage across the intersection. Continue west on 7000 S. till you reach the school.
2-b If you live in the apartment complex on the SW corner of 1300 W. and 7000 S. – use the sidewalk on 7000 S. and make your way to the intersection where the crossing guard will ensure safe passage. Continue on 7000 S. till you reach the school.
2-c If you live south of 7400 S. – you can travel south on 1300 W. to the intersection at 1300 W. and 7800 S. Cross the street and walk north on 1300 W. till you reach the intersection at 7000 S. Turn left and continue towards the school. You could also travel north on 1300 W. Keeping in mind that the sidewalk is non-existent until you reach 7400 S. Then follow the directions in 2-a.
Note: There are a large number of stop signs at side streets that exit onto 1300 West. This may present a safety concern as students cross streets along 1300 West and students should be taught pedestrian safety (i.e. making eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of stopped cars) both in the school and in their homes.
#3 EAST SIDE OF 1300 W. BETWEEN 7000 S. AND WINCHESTER (6685 S.)
Make your way to 1300 W. and continue south till you reach 7000 S. There will be a crossing guard to ensure safe passage across the intersection. You can continue on the south side of 7000 S. till you reach the school. You could also walk on the north side of 7000 S. till you reached the crossing guard at the west end of the school.
#4 NORTH OF 7000 S. TO 6600 S. BETWEEN 1300 W. AND REDWOOD
You can find safe walking routes within the neighborhoods or you can walk around the periphery on 1300 W, 7000 S. or Redwood Road. There is one area where the sidewalk is missing. Aside from that area, any path will be a safe walking route. Only cross 7000 S. at one of the two crosswalks with crossing guards. There is a missing sidewalk on the west side of 1300 W. from Columbia Dr. to 7000 S. There is a shoulder area, but no sidewalk. Students traveling south on 1300 W. are encouraged to turn on Columbia Dr. and make their way to the crosswalk at the NW corner of the school through the neighborhoods.
BICYCLE/SCOOTER ROUTES: Students who ride bicycles or scooters to school are encouraged to use the same safe walking routes as indicated on the SNAP plan map. Bicyclists should always wear helmets and walk their bikes or scooters across crosswalks, check first to see that there are no vehicles approaching.
